This lovely old gentleman is a retired Thoroughbred race horse. He is enjoying himself at a nice farm where he takes select riders on trails and through their riding lessons. I chose to put him in this abstract, rustic background with the weave of the canvas showing to add a sense of an easy life. He was kind to strike this pose for me and play along as I snapped reference photos. I think by his expression that he liked the idea of being painted. I love to make a connection with anyone who views my art by touching a shared sentiment. I prefer simplifying and abstracting elements to express a feeling, emotion or moment in time rather than replicating my subject. I have always loved animals, with dogs being particularly special. Bringing out their spirits in art feels like sharing their love. As a self-taught artist, I enjoy working in an array of materials and mediums - acrylic paint on canvas is my current favorite.
